The One Good Dog Garbage Pop Radio Hour: 2/5/2020

CW mention of suicide

good morning! today's episode of The One Good Dog Garbage Pop Radio Hour is available for you to stream right now.

if you didn't know, Deeper from Chicago is donating a portion of the proceeds from their new album "Auto-Pain" to Hope For The Day, which is a non-profit movement for proactive suicide prevention through outreach and mental health education. i talked about that, and then got a little wrapped up in it, and then i got on my little soapbox, and then i said "don't kill yourself", which was maybe startling to hear.

i got a phone call from a listener right after that, asking "what was that organization called again?" and it kind of rooted my one-sided conversation in reality.

mental health / suicide prevention is important stuff to me. the past few years of my life have been spent addressing both the mental health issues that run in my family, and the locally-sourced, farm-fresh, 100% organic ones, with a therapist. it's been good & it's been super necessary for me.

being transparent about this stuff (mostly offline, honestly), without foisting my trauma on others, has kind of been my attempt to play a small part in this wave of de-stigmatizing mental health conversations on a person-to-person basis.

if you feel like something is up, that very well might be the case. it's not a shameful thing to admit that you might need some help from a person whose job it is to help. i'd also encourage you to not let the concept of emotional labor stop you from leaning on your friends & family, if you can. in a lot of ways, that's why they're there.

this got longer than i expected. please reach out to me if you wanna talk about this stuff; it's important. de-stigmatizing conversations about mental health is the first step, and the next step is making therapy much, much more accessible. it's a privilege to be on this soapbox - thx for listening, hope you enjoy the show, please take care of yourself and tell your friends you love 'em.
