Today is the birthday of the 19th century American Author, Edward Bellamy, born in 1850 and known for his visionary novel “Looking Backward: 2000–1887.” The third largest bestseller of its time, after Uncle Tom's Cabin and Ben-Hur, “Looking Backward,” is about a man who falls asleep in 1887 and wakes up in the year 2000, 113 years later in a utopian future. While his predictions of credit cards, the radio, and Amazon-like purchases are remarkably uncanny for the time, it's Bellamy's vision of a Socialist future--a future where all citizens retire at the age 45, that we find the most appealing while celebrating the birthday of our Sound Affects’ host Keven.
